There are many steps involved in organizing your Etsy shop, sooooo…. I am creating a series of articles to help you do this step-by-step.
You may have seen my previous article that talked about strategic tips to organize your Etsy shop sections— if you haven’t you will definitely want to read it and organize your sections, as each step of Etsy shop organization builds on the previous one.
I’m also talking about product variations — including a very common mistake handmade sellers make when choosing product variations that you will want to be sure to avoid.
In today’s article we are going to be talking about your Etsy shop’s featured listings and your listings order, so all about how to display your listings and what products or sections of your shop you should feature in order to maximize product views and sales.
So, ready? Let’s dive in.
The first thing I want to talk about are featured items.
If you go to any shop on Etsy, you will find a section at the top called featured items, like you see in this shop:
You get to choose which four items you want to have featured at the top, and also what order you would like them displayed in. So if you do not have the Etsy Plus paid plan, your featured listings will look like the ones in this picture.
One thing I really like about the featured images above is how they are very cohesive style-wise and work really well together as a group. If you’re a Tizzit HQ member you know that in our “How to create your product collection” course I talk about how important it is to have a cohesive product line, and it is also important to remember this when choosing your featured images.
If you are paying for the Etsy Plus plan, you have access to advanced customization options for your featured listings, such as larger pictures and being able to link to sections of your shop instead of to individual product listings.
One option you have is larger featured images, such as the ones in this shop:
You can see that instead of the small 4 thumbnail in a row, this shop has 2 larger images at the top and then 3 smaller ones below, which is a layout option you can only get with an Etsy plus plan.
Another Etsy Plus feature is the ability to feature a shop section instead of a particular listing in your featured items. Take a look for example at this shop:
As you can see, they have store sections highlighted in their featured images – you can see it because it shows that each section contains several items: 47 items for the first one, 36 for the second, etc.
Something nice when you decide to feature a section rather than a product is that you can upload your own custom image to act as a thumbnail for that section which is a fantastic opportunity to design a nice graphic with your brand colors and fonts in Canva or whichever graphic design software you prefer and this really helps in branding your shop further.
Next you might be wondering how to decide what to include in your featured listings:

There are a number of ways you can approach this. You need to think strategically about what items are most likely to be what shoppers are looking for, or what items are appealing enough for one reason or another that the shopper will want to click to learn more!
Here are options to consider:
A final point to consider when choosing your featured items is something I mentioned about one of the shops above: and that is to make sure the products you choose work well together and present a cohesive feel for your shop and your brand.
Even though your featured items might be totally different products or have different functions, you want the shopper to enjoy looking at them all together— so this is all about having a consistent feel, or a consistent theme.
Next let’s move on to your product listing order. In Etsy, you have the ability to rearrange your listings to display products in the order you want.
Your goal with your listing order is to make people want to click on as many products as possible from your same shop, and there are several ways to go about this:
One way to entice shoppers to click on more listings is to arrange your products from a complementary standpoint. So for example, if you make jewelry, you could arrange your products so that if you have a set of earrings, you could put a complimentary necklace listing next to the earrings, and some complimentary bracelets next to that. If someone likes the earrings, they will see the bracelet and necklace next to them and be tempted to open those product windows as well to take a look!
Another option is to group products by collection. In this situation you will group products visually, for example if you make pottery pieces for the kitchen, you may have mugs, pitchers, and serving platters that have the same glaze design. Someone who is looking for unique coffee mugs will see the other options and be tempted to get them to go with the mugs they are buying.
None of these ways of arranging your products is right or wrong, it simply depends on factors like what products you want to highlight and push for sales and your overall shop strategy.
Regardless of which way you display your products, product groupings are something you should always be watching and changing if needed. Notice what products are selling, what combinations seem to be working well, what time of year it is (do you have seasonal products you want to feature?)— details like this help you keep on top of what product arrangements bring your products more views, and your shop more sales.
So as you can see there is a strategy to setting up your Etsy featured listings and listing order, and the more strategic you are the more clicks and views – and sales – your products will get!
Don’t just upload your listings and let the order be pretty random and just based on when you’ve uploaded what. Curate a storefront that will make it easier to get sales.
