Today we’re going to talk about Etsy keyword research using eRank.
eRank does a lot (much more than keyword research!) which is why I love this tool, but today we’re going to focus on keyword research tools inside of eRank.
When it comes to Etsy keyword research, I find that the problem most makers have is that they don’t have an organized workflow or system to find the best keywords.
If this sounds like you, this article will help you with this!
Without a system, you often end up with like 155 tabs open and keywords all over the place – both in eRank and scribbled on a notepad and maybe on a spreadsheet too- but no clear system to know what to do with all of it!
Today I’ll share with you the 3-step workflow I use to do keyword research using eRank as efficiently as possible, and as I do that I’ll also show you my favorite tools for each step of this workflow.
So, ready? Let’s dive in.
Before we jump into eRank, let’s talk a little about what the 3 steps of the workflow are:
In BRAINSTORM, you generate as many keyword ideas as possible for the product you’re doing SEO for.
Then you RESEARCH: Check those brainstorm ideas against actual data from Etsy and find new ideas you didn’t think of yourself during the brainstorming step.
Last comes SCORING, where you decide which keywords from your final research list you will use in your listing, by scoring your keywords.
Let’s go through each one in detail and talk about how eRank tools can help you do them.

Brainstorm should start AWAY from eRank.
We are going to dive into eRank to find even more ideas in the RESEARCH phase (STEP 2), but brainstorming starts outside of the tool and should be a brain dump of your ideas. Good and bad ones.
Two common problems I see makers run into when they are brainstorming are:
I think we can all relate to this . . . because we find it hard to think outside of the box— outside of how “we have been thinking about our product.” It can be so bloody hard to find another way to say “candle” or “blanket” right?!
To get past this hurdle, you need an effective brainstorming system that will prompt you so you can generate more ideas more easily.
If you are an HQ member, head over to the Etsy SEO Blueprint course inside your course library where we have a full system for this with a keyword brainstorm spreadsheet, workbook, and more.

This is another problem that I commonly see: we start FILTERING our ideas as we think of them. DON’T DO IT.
During your brainstorm, you should generate so many ideas that the majority of them will be bad ones, and that’s ok. If you haven’t generated a single bad keyword idea during your brainstorm you haven’t done it properly.
This sounds weird, but it’s because to get more good ideas you have to be ok with your brain suggesting bad ones too.
Filtering happens because our brains can’t help but analyze the ideas we’re having. So we are trying to brainstorm but we are also already half into analysis mode. That’s not effective.
Try as much as you can to let it all flow, a real brain dump ON PAPER without judgment.
Another subconscious thing at play here is that deep down you know that when you are writing ideas on paper or in a spreadsheet, you will eventually need to type them into your keyword research tool to check the data for it.
So what happens? Well, since it’s not the funnest part of the process we start to think “no one will use this keyword anyway” and get rid of it while still in the brainstorming process. Without even bringing this idea to the next step (which is research).
BUT, you really never know — some of those keywords you’re generating and think are great might turn out to be not-so-good (as in no one is searching for them). . . and others you think aren’t worth investigating might actually turn out to be great for your listing.
This is where TOOL NUMBER 1 inside eRank comes in! It’s the BULK KEYWORD TOOL – let’s jump in the app to take a look together.
OK so once you’ve done your brainstorm and you’ve used the Bulk Keyword Tool to 1) eliminate the keywords that had no searches or very low searches and 2) keep those that did, you’re ready for:
So now you’re going to check your ideas from the brainstorm step against actual data from Etsy, and find new ideas you didn’t think of yourself!
And that’s where the eRank KEYWORD TOOL comes into play, along with what I call my TWO TABS RULE which will save you from overwhelm and keep you super organized and efficient. Let me show you!
OK so now you’ve got a keyword list full of ideas that you can consider for your listing. You’re ready for the last step, which is:
. . . and for this you’re going to use the KEYWORD LIST and FLAGGING SYSTEM tool. Let’s jump back into the app and see just what this tool does:
