With over 2 billion monthly active users on the platform, there’s no doubt Facebook is a great place to market your handmade products and promote your shop.
But it can be hard to get people to actually see and engage with your posts or with your Page. in which case you might have been tempted to click on the “Boost Post” button.
If you have, or if you’re thinking about it – I am here to tell you PLEASE don’t. Here’s why.
Let’s talk about using Facebook ads to grow your shop and promote your products. I love Facebook and I think that Facebook advertising, when done well, can do great things for your business. But here’s the key: when done well.
Here’s the problem with the “Boost Post” button:
I believe the majority of people clicking and using it aren’t actually ready to advertise on Facebook.
What do I mean by that?
The problem with the “Boost Post” button is that it’s a shortcut Facebook invented so that people who don’t have a clear strategy nor understand how advertising on Facebook works could click on it and spend their money.

How do you know if that’s your case – or if you’re ready to invest into Facebook ads? I have 2 questions that will help you:
→ Do you know what Facebook campaign objectives are?
→ Do you know what different targeting options Facebook offers?
If you replied “no” in your head or if it sounds like I was just speaking a different language just then, it’s ok, but you need to understand those concepts before giving ANY money to Facebook and investing into ads on the platform.
Why? The “Boost post” button gives you limited options and control over
When you click the “Boost Post” button, you’re letting Facebook make some very important decisions for you, including who to show the post to and what type of results you want from your ad. It will offer you a couple of options like “I want people to engage with my post” or “I want to start a messenger conversation” but that’s a very simplified interface and will give you limited options if you compare it to everything else you can actually do with Facebook ads.
In short, it’s NOT the best way at all to promote one of your posts on Facebook. There are some situations where it will do a good job, but you don’t want to leave that to chance and you want to make sure that you understand how it works first before ever using it.
So what should you do instead?

Hi Deb,
Yup, I’m one of those “misguided “ FB boost button pressers!
I ran 2 boost ad campaigns, spent €36 for 4 days & got nothing but hundreds of likes on my pretty picture… useless in my experience.
I was aiming to drive traffic to my Etsy store, but it did not achieve this result.
It’s just so hard to stand out from the crowd.
It’s understandable and not your fault. It’s all about those Facebook campaign objectives. It sounds like your ad did great in terms of engagement, but if what you wanted was traffic, then it’s always best to set your ad up via the Business Manager so you can set “traffic” as your objective, and Facebook will show your ad to people more likely to visit your website, not to just like your post 🙂
